Are You Able to Relate to This?
You search online for what retirement jobs may be available and more often than not you fail to qualify by being too old or under-qualified.
You land an interview and you never hear from them again. You know your age is throwing you a curve. So what are you going to do?
Chances are, you are long past the age to upgrade to a new skill. So now, where does that leave you? You still need money and your monthly income still comes up short of the total you need to balance your bank account.
Caretakers-The Best Retirement Job Ever is a book my wife and I wrote afterworking as Caretakers for over 20 years in the vancouver area of British Columbia. It was the most fruitful and enjoyable work we ever had done. We met hundreds of wonderful people along the way and made a financially rewarding living at the age when most people of our ages were long retired. The truth was that we did not have pensions enough to retire. Luckily being caretakers was the answer to our prayers.
Will you have enough income when you retire?
If not, what will you do? Where will the extra dollars come from? Are you ready to retire now? Or will retirement come when your company says so. The time to do something about your retirement is now, not when you are told the company is cutting staff. Today more than ever we must be proactive. If you find yourself suddenly are out of work, finding gainful employment will be that much harder. Perhaps you feel that your retirement income will be adequate, but a pension that is indexed more often than not cannot keep up with inflation and you discover your pension appears to be unable to cover all of your costs of living.
We Are All Getting On
Every day you awake to face the world you are one day older. One day away from that age of 50, 55, 60, or 75 when you are going to need more money each month.
This was the position we found ourselves in when the opportunity hit us like a ton of bricks! Our career as caretakers became our road to stability. Here is our story …
We both arrived on this planet in the middle of the Great Depression. I grew up in a small coal mining town in Nova Scotia and my wife, Irma, on a farm in New Brunswick. Irma was one of 12 children in the French area of the province where her father and mother scratched a living from the soil. They were hard workers but future prospects were not great. Irma first left home at the ripe, old age of 14 to work as a housekeeper, probably a sign of things to come.
My dad owned a small jewelry store where he earned a living repairing watches and clocks and tending to the needs and wishes of his customers. I had four siblings and my mom and dad provided for us well. I loved anything mechanical and left school at 15 to learn my trade with my dad as a jeweler/watchmaker. At 18, I left to join the Navy and see the world as life in the small town was not moving ahead.
While I sailed the ports of the world for a few years, Irma moved along in life finally working at Sears in Halifax, Nova Scotia where we then met and fell in love — which brings us to the next chapter in Caretakers-The Best Retirement Job Ever. A good friend of mine literally dragged me along as he had a real problem with “three’s a crowd”.
Be sure to read on as we explain how we discovered the wonderful world of Caretakers.
